Drew Barrymore - Breast Reduction
This isn't anything new, but with all the recent news surrounding bad plastic surgery (i.e. Courtney Love and Britney Spears) I thought I'd post about some good plastic surgery.
Drew Barrymore underwent breast reduction surgery at age 16. She looks fabulous.
Breast reduction surgery is a great procedure for women (and some men) who have overly large breasts which can create back, neck, and shoulder pain. It is best for people whose breasts are disproportionately large for their size. The extra breast tissue and skin is cut out and the breast lifted back onto the chest. The main negative about this surgery is the scars that are created. These scars are permanent, although usually fade with time (1-2 years). So yes, when Drew flashed her breasts to Dave Letterman several years ago, he probably saw her scars as well.
Some other notable celebrities who've had breast reduction surgery include Queen Latifah and Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster).
One quick story: A 14 year old boy who had DDD's was brought in by his grandma (who raised him) because he was so embarrassed of his breasts (gynecomastia) that he wouldn't leave the house. He was failing out of school and ignoring his friends. His grandma knew he had large breasts, although he wouldn't show her, and asked me if I could help him. She hoped that breast reduction surgery would improve his self-esteem and get him out of the house and back to school and friends. I performed the surgery shortly thereafter, removing over 4 pounds from each breast. He healed great. Three months later on his last post-operative visit his grandma took me aside to ask me a favor. She asked me to encourage him to stay in and do his homework, since he was going out with his friends all the time and was never home. The best part of it was that he had to cut the appointment short because he had a date!

Wow. I've never heard of men having such large breasts. Was the boy overweight, or was it some genetic thing?
ReplyDeleteSeveral body builders at the gym developed large breasts and required surgery but they had been on steroids for years.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Drew Barrymore: she's finally maturing into her strong Barrymore features and has become a lovely and classic beauty rather than the annoying brat she'd been for so long.
Dear Dr. Y. - What a great story! I visit here all the time from Hollow Squirrel and I *love* how a) realistic b) normal you are with your patients. Which episode of Dr. 90210 were you on? I'd love to see it!
ReplyDeletePS Great story about the boy. When are y'all going to figure out how to do a lift without the upside down T shaped cut? Natural D's on my body frame are still ooook, but....I can see the future.
Thanks for your comments. I was on the first season of Dr. 90210 in an episode entitled "Family." As for this boy with the massive breasts, it was just a developmental abnormality. There are also shorter scar breast reductions, but they usually come with their own problems (funny looking nipple, wrinkling, etc.)
ReplyDeletebut what was the cause of the gynecomastia? does he have klinefelter's?
ReplyDeleteThat's a cool story!! =)
