Yahoo! Music is reporting that music star Fergie is upset about a recent magazine suggesting she may have had plastic surgery to her nose and eyebrows. The article states:
Two pictures of The Black Eyes Peas star - one from the 1980s, and one from 2007 - are printed side-by-side in the current issue of Us Weekly, and a surgeon tells the publication it's likely Fergie has had a rhinoplasty procedure.
But the 32-year-old has denied the claims, and admits such speculation upsets her so much she has seen a therapist.
Fergie says, "One of those (celebrity) magazines says I've had a nose job and an eyebrow lift, which is completely untrue.
"Personally, I see a therapist. It's hard, it hurts my feelings. I call my hypnotherapist and cry and let it go. That's what I do (to cope). I think that they nitpick these days so much and it's just got to the point where it's ridiculous."
Is this type of scrutiny (such as what is presented in this blog) the price of fame? Should we not speculate on celebrity plastic surgery so we don't hurt anyone's feelings? Sometimes I wonder... I am interested in your opinions, so comments are appreciated.

Part of being a celebrity is putting yourself in the public eye. It is only natural if people speculate on changes in your appearance if you are in the public eye.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the first comment, The trick with being a celebrity and people not noticing is too do it well and very early! otherwise I think celebrities should just be honest about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm really tired of this latest trend to say you needed a nose job to correct your breathing!
I think michael jackson used that one! when did making your nostrils one third the size help your breathing?
I wonder how stupid celebs think the public are?
They would be better off if they just admitted to having these procedures.
ReplyDeleteDr. Youn, are you going to comment on Joan Van Ark's recent photos? Someone really messed up her face!
I do think that it can be hard as women where societal value is so wrapped up in our physical appearance. I'm not in the public eye nor my friends, but i have known people that have gone and seen therapists because of it.
ReplyDeleteI do think intense speculation is part of fame, but I would feel better if the scrutiny regarding appearances weren't so unrealistic and unhealthy. I think it can send negative messages to people- especially younger ppl that may not digest the message in a healthy way and may think they need to look a certain way that may not be realistic.
i like this blog because you're rarely cruel- you just kind of state your professional opinion rather than cruelly diss people for schadenfreude like some places do.
Yes I think this kind of scrutiny is to be expected when one is a celebrity. And I also think Fergie's had a nose job and a brow lift and maybe a couple other procedures.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I look at these before and after pictures, read the opinion of an 'expert' who says the subject had this or that procedure, and I still cannot tell what they are talking about. It is often lighting, makeup, etc, that makes the difference. Unless it is very obvious, I think it is irresponsible for anyone, especially a medical expert, to speculate on what cosmetic surgery a person has had. On the other hand, I can't stand it when celebs don't own up to having had something done...they don't have to share details. I have had several cosmetic surgical procedures and no one but my husband knows. It does drive people crazy. Some comments to me have been, 'you lost a lot of weight' (no weight change, petite all my life) to 'did you get a boob job? (nope) from MY OWN SISTER!! That is the beauty of good plastic surgery..no one it supposed to be able to tell what you had done...
ReplyDeleteAnon#3 - I haven't had a chance to really check out Joan Van Ark, but hopefully will get to it soon.
ReplyDeleteWhen you're an actress/actor or singer, and make your living basically because you have fans, then you have to expect this kind of attention, too.
ReplyDeleteI do think it's fair, although I agree that women get a lot more criticism than men about their appearance. I don't know if Fergie has had a nose job, but I too do wish celebrities would just 'fess up to the fact that they just wanted a different nose, instead of the `I needed it for medical reasons' excuse.
I like the way you approach the subjects in your blog. You don't criticize, but instead just give interesting information from the clinical perspective.
Dr Youn, I emailed the photo of Joan Van Ark to you. It looks like her skin is blueish around the mouth area. Do you think excessive injections (we're probably talking 20+ years here) are causing tissue death?
ReplyDeleteDoubt it, but she doesn't look good. See my current post for details!
ReplyDeleteI was a big Stacey Ferguson fan when she was with Wild Orchid, after Kids Incorporated, so I kind of followed her career for awhile. When she came out with Black Eyed Peas, I noticed an instant change and it was the kind that implies plastic surgery. How unfortunate, she was such a beauty then with mad vocals. She's still attractive now, but if compared side by side to her then photos you may get what I mean by "beautiful." But, in her defense, she was also a drug addict so that may have altered her overall appearance even after recovery. Again, what do I know?
ReplyDeleteThey whine too much. These celebrities chose to be celebrities, wanted to be celebrities, pursued celebrity. Public scrutiny comes with the territory and I suspect they like the many rewards, monetary and otherwise, that also come with the territory. Otherwise, they would all voluntarily fade back into obscurity. If they don't want public scrutiny they shouldn't put themselves out there. Sorry, I don't feel sorry for them. You, Dr. Youn, seem very objective, and are only rendering your professional assessment--fun or us, and hopefully fun for you. Don't worry;they're getting paid more than you or me for a whole lot less work.
