Melanie Griffith

Melanie Griffith and plastic surgery...Here is my first post ever for this blog. It was also the cover story for cosmeticsurgery.com back in January. For those of you relatively new to the blog, I hope you find it interesting and entertaining.

Melanie Griffith is becoming a classic example of a Hollywood starlet who has attempted to use plastic surgery to unsuccessfully retain her youthful beauty. During "Working Girl," she had a very nice look, which has been tampered with too much since then. The most obvious feature is her overly large, misshapen lips. She has augmented her lips too much, causing her to lose the Cupid's bow part of her upper lip. This is likely a sign of a gortex lip implant (a type of plastic that some plastic surgeons use to augment the lips, whereas I use it for the covering on my jacket). The easiest way to spot a gortex implant is to see how the lip moves while the person is talking. The gortex does not allow the lip to move normally, and therefore the lip looks too stiff. I find that the vast majority of patients who get gortex lip implants will later have them removed. Her lip augmentation is a misguided attempt to look young, as a sign of youth is larger lips. However, there is a fine line between "bee stung" and youthful, and she has crossed it. Interestingly enough, the person in Hollywood with the largest, most luscious lips, Angelina Jolie, appears to have had them all her life. While some actresses get their lips overly enlarged in order to look younger and keep up with the younger Hollywood stars, it usually doesn't help keep their careers going. While other actresses of Melanie's generation such as Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis have continued with successful acting careers, Melanie Griffith's career appears to have stalled in the early 90's.

In addition to the lips, she appears to have had some Botox to smooth her forehead, and laser treatments and a probable facelift to over tighten her face. This makes her facial movements appear too tight (à la Joan Rivers) and is a sign of too much plastic surgery.

Melanie has had so much work done that, reportedly, husband Antonio Banderas has forbidden her to have any more plastic surgery. She would look much more natural and glamorous, in my opinion, if she just had the implants removed from her lips.

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson's "Nasty" breasts - Here is a photo of Janet's breasts, on display a couple days ago in Germany. She has lost a lot of weight and looks great, but the breasts look a bit round for my taste. It appears that she has breast implants which are above the muscle, as implants which are above the muscle move together like that and show more roundness than implants under the muscle. It is also possible she has a capsular contracture, which is a condition where scar tissue builds up around the implants, causing them to be round and hard. It is possible that her weight loss has decreased so much of her body fat percentage, that her breasts are mostly skin and implant now. I don't think she had plastic surgery to help her with the weight loss, but it is possible that diet pills may have been involved. Either way, she looks fantastic (except the thin nose).

Brooke Burke

Brooke Burke of the TV show "Rock Star: Supernova" was married to a prominent plastic surgeon seen on "Extreme Makeover." They supposedly separated about a year ago. Victoria Principal is another Hollywood starlet who is married to a plastic surgeon. She, too, looked good last time I saw her.
Brooke obviously looks fantastic, but has likely had some help from her ex-husband. If only he could have given her some help with her monotone speaking voice. Add some inflection, please!

Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer told InStyle magazine that she “toys” with the idea of plastic surgery, but isn’t ready to go under the knife just yet. “When I’m rested, I look pretty darn OK. I can hold off on that facelift for another few years,” the 48-year-old said. “(But) when I’m feeling weary, then I think, maybe I better make that appointment.” Pfeiffer states that she tries not to “dwell” on aging despite the pressures to look young in Hollywood. “Aging happens to every single one of us. Once you accept that, it unburdens you.”

Although I cannot spot any obvious anti-aging work she's had done (except maybe some Botox), it does appear that she has had a rhinoplasty in the past. Her nose is very thin and pinched, and looks post-surgical. It has gotten a bit thinner with age. I have found this to be a common finding in post-rhinoplasty patients.
I still think she was an amazing Catwoman though...

Lindsay Lohan

According to contactmusic.com, Lindsay Lohan recently exclaimed, "Yes, it's sad that anybody would (have cosmetic surgery) at my age. It's just disgusting."
Hmmm.... The interesting thing about this statement is that her breasts appear to have gotten significantly larger over the last few weeks. Now, this can be commonly due to weight gain or pregnancy, but there is no evidence that either has taken place. Then does one conclude that Ms. Lohan is "disgusting?"

Paula Abdul

What happened to Paula Abdul's breasts? Her breasts in this photo obviously look pretty droopy, but there appears to be an unnatural sagging in her cleavage. This look can be seen with breast implants which are a bit heavy and cause the skin to stretch downward. This happens more often with larger implants (greater than 400cc) and with people who have weak breast tissue (older women or women who have lost a lot of weight). It is possible that we are just seeing a 44 year old woman's naturally droopy breasts, but in my opinion this is more likely the result of sagging caused by implants, likely placed on top of the muscle. The treatment is simple: breast lift (mastopexy). That would bring the implants and breasts back "Straight Up." I wonder what Simon would say about this?

Paris Hilton is full of it

Follow-up quote from Paris Hilton (whose decision not to have breast augmentation was due to a desire to avoid looking "sleazy"):

“A lot of women are too thin. But I like food too much,”
“I think the ones who are getting really skinny look gross."
A lot of my friends still don't have a job and they live at home, and have to ask their parents for everything.”
“I haven't accepted money from my parents since I was 18. Since then, I've worked on my own. It feels good that I don't ever have to depend on a man or my family for anything.”

Pot, I hear the kettle calling you!
Give me a break.

Brittany Murphy

Has Brittany Murphy had a breast augmentation? This recent photo shows some telltale signs of a breast augmentation, including the excessive roundness of the upper part of the breasts. She's such a petite person that a breast augmentation is most likely the only way for her to have breasts this size. When looking at old photos of her it appears that the surgery was done sometime between 2004 and 2005.
She has transformed herself from the "Clueless" nerd to the "8 Mile" junkie to a glamorous Hollywood actress. She's looking more and more like Jessica Simpson. Although I don't love any movies she's made, she is a nice alternative to the wholesome Reese Witherspoon types (who was fantastic in "Walk the Line").

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley has admitted that she has no breasts and her profile has been enhanced for movie posters and advertising. Apparently the studios want them to look like C cups. She has become so skinny that her breasts appear to have all but disappeared. She has such a classically pretty face that it's a shame she continues to get thinner and thinner. Eventually it will make her face older and more gaunt.

Adult dancers and broken implants

There is a funny story about adult dancers and ruptured breast implants in Dr. Rob Oliver's Plastic Surgery 101 blog. It seems that there was a fight that broke out at a nude club and one dancer had her breast implant punctured by a broken wine glass.
I've performed breast augmentations on female dancers quite often. Most of them are friendly and even-keeled, although some can be quite nutty. I'm sure there are bad apples in that line of work like any other though (plastic surgeons especially).

Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis has decided not to have any more plastic surgery. According to Plasmetic.com she has undergone a lower eyelid surgery and liposuction which led to complications, and has now decided that she will not have anymore. If only she would make the same decision about doing movies with Lindsay Lohan.
In the medical community she is known for a different, not-so-plastic-surgery-related medical condition. Does anyone know what it is?

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke cut off his own finger? According to Starpulse.com the actor Mickey Rourke (whom I think did a great job in Sin City) cut off his own finger because he "didn't want it."
He reportedly said, "I cut my little finger off because I thought I didn't want it. I was angry about something so I decided I didn't need the end of the little finger on my left hand. I didn't cut it off completely - it was still hanging on a tendon - and an English friend, Gary, carefully carried the end of it as we went to hospital to try to rectify the situation. It took the surgeon eight hours to sew it back on. I still can't bend it properly."
...And he appears to have had a bad facelift too. What an idiot.

Elle MacPherson

Elle MacPherson doesn't want plastic surgery. The Australian supermodel nicknamed "The Body" told to Britain's Grazia magazine: "It hasn't occurred to me to intervene with the course of nature to date. I have a strong aversion to putting anything artificial inside my body. I don't even take aspirin."
At 43 years old she looks great. Nature has been very kind to her. I wouldn't operate on her if she asked me to.

Rachel Hunter

Did Rachel Hunter show her breast augmentation scars? There is a recent post on Splash News Online which shows a topless supermodel Rachel Hunter. There is what appears to be a very visible inframammary (in the breast crease) scar, a telltale sign of a breast augmentation. The scar looks a bit dark, which shows that she either doesn't scar well or had it revised recently. Normally most scars will fade within a year or two. I often use that scar in the breast augmentations that I do, and it usually doesn't end up looking that noticeable. Other ways to put in breast implants include through the armpit (a very nice way to do it), around the areola (not my favorite, but ok nonetheless), and through the belly button (controversial).

Daily Blabber video on Plastic Surgery

Check out an entertaining video from the Daily Blabber on Celebrity Plastic Surgery. Suzie riffs on celebrities such as Kenny Rogers, Meg Ryan, and Lisa Rinna. Some of her comments are off the mark (I don't believe Kenny Rogers had a facelift and I do believe that Janet Jackson lost all her weight without surgery), but it is worth a view if you like this type of stuff. I've considered doing something like this myself if the right show comes along...
